Coding and AI Camp

The Coding & AI Camp at SUNY Geneseo offers four distinct, week-long immersive day programs  throughout the summer, each focusing on a different topic in coding, data analytics, or artificial intelligence and designed to introduce high school students to the rapidly evolving world of AI and data science.

Participants engage in hands-on projects in coding, artificil intelligence, and data-driven problem solving under the guidance of Geneseo's outstanding faculty.

The camp emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity, providing students with valuable analytical skills and meanigful exposure to college-level study and emerging career pathways in technology, business analytics, and data science.

Eligibility: Rising 9th to 12th grade students

Drop off time: 8:00am-9:00am

Pick up time: 4:00pm-5:00pm

Students choose the week(s) that matches the topic(s) they want to explore.

Week 1: July 7-10 Introduction to Python Programming: This session helps students get started with Python in a fun, hands-on, project-based way. Students will learn the basics of programming, including variables, loops, and making decisions with if statements, and then use those skills to explore real-world data. Examples include streaming movie lists, sports player stats, and other data people see in everyday life, like money, business, and social media trends. During the week, students will create clear charts and build a simple interactive data app, such as a movie explorer or sports stats dashboard, where they can search, filter, and view results. By the end of the session, students will have a finished project they can show and explain, along with stronger problem-solving skills and more confidence in coding.

Week 2: July 13-17 Data Visualization with Excel & Tableau Public: Ever wonder how data turns into the charts and dashboards you see in the news, sports, and social media? In this session, you’ll learn how to transform data into eye-catching visuals using Excel and Tableau Public. Through hands-on activities, you’ll will organize data and create charts and interactive dashboards that help tell a story with data - just like real analysts do. You’ll explore patterns, communicate insights clearly, and work with real-world examples to see how data visualization plays a key role in data science and AI-related projects. No prior experience needed - just curiosity!

Week 3: July 20-24 Database Management & SQL:This session introduces students to how data is stored, organized, and queried using SQL, the standard language behind modern databases. Through hands-on activities and examples, students will learn how to retrieve and analyze data, combine information across tables, and answer practical questions using structured queries. The course is designed for students with no prior database experience and emphasizes logical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world applications in business, technology, and data analytics.

Week 4: July 27-31 Introduction to Applied AI and Prompt Engineering: This session introduces students to the fast growing world of Artificial Intelligence through fun, hands-on activities and creative projects. Students will learn how modern AI tools work, how to use them effectively, and how to use AI responsibly and ethically in school, hobbies, and everyday life. Throughout the week, they’ll experiment with different types of AI interfaces, such as chat-based tools, image generation, data exploration, and creative writing assistants, to see how each can support problem solving, brainstorming, and productivity. By practicing techniques for clearer, more intentional prompting, students will learn to achieve better results and understand the strengths and limitations of different AI systems. By the end of the session, each student will create a small portfolio of AI assisted work, such as a story, a mini research project, a creative design, or a presentation along with a stronger understanding of how to collaborate with AI effectively and ethically.
